Bean Plant from a Bean

The French beans have been really fascinating me since we planted them almost four weeks ago. Ever since realising that bean plants come from planting an actual bean they have continued to impress! I keep forgetting to post these pictures. The first one shows how the inside of the bean comes up out of the soil. It doesn’t sprout a stem in the way I expected. It looks like the bean itself rises out of the soil, while growing a stem behind it which is rooted in the soil. I feel like it is nearly growing backwards!

The second picture shows this ‘husk’ which it has left behind in the soil as it has grown up. This looks like it was probably the outer, papery skin of the dried bean we planted. I imagine it will eventually disintegrate into the soil as the plant grows bigger. It is just like Jack and the Beanstalk!
